Finding a room near a Dublin hospital: tips for healthcare staff

13 October 2026

Shift work changes what you need from a room. When you finish late or start before the first bus, being close to the hospital, or to a direct Luas or train line, matters more than almost anything else. Here is how to find somewhere that works for hospital life in Dublin.

Put the commute first

Start with how you will get to work at the times you actually travel. Look for rooms within walking or cycling distance, or close to a stop on a direct line to the hospital. A slightly dearer room ten minutes away can be worth far more than a cheaper one with two changes.

StayLister has a page for each major hospital showing rooms nearby, nearest first, with the nearest train and Luas stops and local shops. Each ad also shows the walk to its own nearest stop.

Short-term first, then something longer

Hospital doctors in training usually change jobs in January and July, and nurses and students on placement start all year round. If you are only there for a rotation or a placement, a short-term let or digs can save you signing up for a long tenancy.

If you are staying longer, a short room for your first weeks lets you get to know the area before committing.

Ask about the house and shift patterns

Mention that you work shifts when you contact an advertiser. A quiet house, blackout curtains and housemates who won't mind you coming in at 9am make a real difference.

Ask about bills, laundry and whether you can cook at odd hours.

Stay safe

Don't pay a deposit before viewing the place and meeting the person. If you are moving from abroad and can't view in person, ask a colleague or friend to view it, or book somewhere short-term until you arrive.
