Short-term let or long-term room: which is right for you?
13 October 2026
Should you take a short-term let for a few weeks or months, or commit to a long-term room? It depends on how sure you are about where you'll be, and what matters most: flexibility, price or security.
When a short-term let makes sense
If you are new to a city, on a placement or internship, waiting for a long-term place, or only need somewhere for a set period, a short-term let gives you flexibility. You can view long-term places in person while you are there.
The trade-offs
Short-term lets usually cost more per month, and you may have to move again. Check the exact dates, what is included and the minimum stay before you agree.
When a long-term room is better
If you know you will stay for a year or more, a long-term room is usually cheaper and gives you stability. In a tenancy where the owner doesn't live, you have rights under the Residential Tenancies Acts, and new rules from March 2026 mean tenancies can run for longer.
A common plan
Many people book a short-term room for their first few weeks, then move to a long-term room they have viewed in person. It costs a little more at first but avoids rushed decisions and scams.
