Splitting bills in a house share: a fair, simple system
13 October 2026
Money is the most common reason house shares fall out. A simple system for splitting bills, agreed at the start, avoids almost all of it. Here is one that works.
List every bill
Typical shared bills are electricity, gas or oil for heating, broadband, bins and sometimes a TV licence and cleaning supplies. Find out which are in whose name and how often each is billed.
Choose how to split
Splitting evenly is simplest and works when rooms are similar. If one room is much bigger, has an ensuite or someone works from home all day, the house may agree a different share. Decide together and write it down.
Make paying easy
Use a shared note or a bill-splitting app so everyone can see what is owed. Agree a date each month when everyone pays their share, and who pays the provider.
Keep heating costs down together
Agree when the heating comes on and for how long. Small habits, like closing doors and windows when the heating is on, make a real difference in an Irish winter.
When someone moves out
Settle the last bills before they leave, using meter readings on their moving-out day. That keeps it fair for everyone.
