Fake rental ads in Ireland: how to spot them on social media

13 October 2026

Fake rental ads are common in Irish Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups and online marketplaces, especially before college terms start. Scammers copy real photos and post rooms that don't exist. Here is how to spot them.

The price is too good

A lovely room in a sought-after area for far below what similar rooms cost is the most common sign. Compare with other ads in the same area before you get excited.

They can't show you the room

The advertiser is abroad, working on an oil rig, or will "post the keys". They avoid video calls and in-person viewings. A real advertiser can arrange a viewing.

They want money first

Any request for a deposit, a "holding fee" or the first month's rent before you have viewed the place is a red flag, especially by money-transfer services, crypto or gift cards.

Check the photos and the person

Search the photos online: scammers reuse pictures from other ads. Look at the person's profile: new accounts with few friends or posts are a warning sign.

Where to report it

Report fake ads to the group admin or platform, and to An Garda Síochána if you have lost money. On StayLister every ad is checked before it goes live, and you can report anything that looks wrong.
