When to start looking for student accommodation in Ireland

13 October 2026

Rooms near Irish colleges go quickly, and the rush starts well before term. A little planning makes a big difference, especially in Dublin, Cork and Galway. Here is a simple timeline you can follow, whether you are starting college for the first time or moving out of halls.

Spring: decide what kind of place suits you

Students in Ireland usually live in one of three ways: purpose-built student accommodation, a room in a house share, or digs (a room in someone's home, often Monday to Friday). Purpose-built places are convenient but usually cost the most. Digs are often the cheapest and can include bills or meals.

Think about what matters most to you: price, being able to walk to campus, cooking for yourself, or having a quiet place to study.

Early summer: set a realistic budget

Add up rent, bills (if they aren't included), food and travel. A cheaper room further out can cost more once you add bus or train fares and time.

For a tenancy, the deposit and the rent paid in advance can each be no more than one month's rent. Digs and rooms in the owner's home are agreed directly, so ask exactly what you'll pay before you commit.

Summer: search early and get alerts

Start looking as soon as you know which college you are likely to attend. Many rooms are taken within days, so save your searches to get an email when a new one is posted, or turn on WhatsApp room alerts.

On StayLister you can search by college and see places sorted by distance to campus, with the walk to the nearest train or Luas stop shown on each ad.

Before you pay anything

Never pay a deposit or rent for a place you haven't viewed, and never pay someone you haven't met. Rental scams peak just before term, and students moving from abroad are targeted most.

If you can't view in person, ask a friend or family member to view it for you, or book somewhere short-term for your first weeks and view places once you arrive.

If term is close and you still have nothing

Don't panic and don't take risks with money. A short-term room or digs for a few weeks gives you time to find something better. Your college's accommodation office and students' union can also help, and many keep lists of local digs and rooms.
