Moving to Ireland: how to find a room before (and after) you arrive

A practical plan for finding somewhere to live when you move to Ireland for work or study, without getting scammed.

Book something short first

Rooms in Dublin especially go quickly and most landlords want to meet you. The safest plan is to book a short-term room for your first two to six weeks, then view long-term places in person once you're here.

What you'll usually be asked for

Photo ID, and often a reference from a previous landlord and proof of work or study (a contract or a college letter). Have these ready as PDFs on your phone.

You don't need a PPS number to rent a room. For a tenancy, the deposit and the rent paid in advance can each be no more than one month's rent.

Know what you're signing up to

In a house share where the owner doesn't live, you are usually a tenant with rights under the Residential Tenancies Acts and the landlord must register with the RTB. In the owner's home (including digs) you are usually a licensee, with fewer protections, so agree the house rules and notice in writing.

Stay safe from abroad

Never send money for a place you haven't viewed, however good it looks. If you can't view in person, ask a friend or colleague to view it, or wait until you arrive. Be wary of anyone who says they are abroad and will post the keys.

Use the tools

On StayLister you can search by college or workplace, see each ad's walk to the nearest train or Luas stop, save a search to get new ads by email, and turn on WhatsApp room alerts.
