Moving out? Help the next person find your room
Leaving a house share? Rooms go faster when the person who knows them best posts them. With your landlord's OK, post your room free on StayLister: your housemates get a say, and the room doesn't sit empty.
Ask your landlord first
- Ask your landlord, in writing (a text or email is fine), if you can find the next person for your room. Some landlords prefer to do it themselves.
- In most house shares the new person makes their own agreement with the landlord. You help find them; the landlord decides.
- Taking over or subletting a tenancy needs the landlord's written consent under the Residential Tenancies Acts. If you're not sure which applies, Threshold or Citizens Information can tell you.
Notice and your deposit
- Give your landlord written notice of the right length. How long depends on how long you've lived there: Citizens Information lists the periods.
- Your deposit comes back from your landlord, not from the next person. Never take money from them yourself unless your landlord asked you to in writing.
- Agree with your landlord and housemates on a move-out date and a time for viewings.
Post your room in a few minutes
- Take clear photos of your room and the shared spaces, tidy and in daylight.
- Post your ad and tick "I'm the current tenant, moving out". Your ad says so, and renters are told to confirm with the landlord before they pay anything.
- Reply to the people who message you, show them around, and introduce the one you all like to your landlord.
