Renting a room with a pet in Ireland

Finding a room that accepts pets is hard but not impossible. How to search, what to ask, how to win over a landlord and housemates, and what to agree in writing.

How to find pet-friendly rooms

Use the "Pets allowed" filter on StayLister, and look at digs and rooms in a homeowner's house: owners who have pets themselves are often happy to take one more.

Be upfront in your first message: the kind of pet, its age, and how it lives (house-trained, crate, indoor or outdoor).

Winning over the landlord and housemates

Offer a reference from a previous landlord that mentions your pet, proof of vaccinations, and an offer to meet the pet at the viewing.

Ask about housemates' allergies before you agree anything. A share where someone is allergic won't work, whatever the landlord says.

Agree it in writing

Get the landlord's or homeowner's permission for the pet in writing, with any conditions (where it can go, cleaning, damage). Check what your agreement says about pets before you sign.

The deposit rules are the same with a pet. Our deposits guide explains the limits for tenancies.

Common questions

Can a landlord refuse a pet?

Yes. Landlords and homeowners can decide whether to accept pets, so get any permission in writing.

How do I find rooms that allow pets?

Use the "Pets allowed" filter, look at rooms in a homeowner's house, and mention your pet in your first message.
